We have not heard from Rich in the last 7 days. If Rich has called or written to any of you, we would love to hear from you.

Rich made a surprise call home on Friday evening, March 21. He is doing well. His final test of skills is coming up in the next few days. He will march about 10 miles to a remote area with his platoon and set up camp. They will be camped out for about a week and must accomplish a number of activities. This is a requirement for each soldier in basic training. Rich is looking forward to his graduation ceremony April 11th.

Rich finished their 3 day march on Wednesday, March 19. He did OK, but there were a number of soldiers that had a very tough time physically because they were not in good shape yet. Each soldier carried a 50# pak. The next and final adventure is going to be the 20K hike when they go on a 7 day camping adventure. Rich said he felt fortunate to be assigned to a tent with his friend Carson. Carson will also be his "Battle Buddy" on the 7 day hike.

Rich is now in the final phase of basic training this week. This includes a PT, Physical Training Test, grenade training and a seven day Victory Forge. The Victory Forge is a seven day operation, in the field, that culminates Basic Combat Training. Soldiers have the opportunity to put all their skill developed during BCT in action here. On his week phone call home Friday, Rich told me he was one of eight soldiers that transported some of the equipment and supplies his platoon would be using to the camp site. He will still have to march out to this camp site with his bay in the next day or two. The soldiers sleep in 8 person tents (Rich did not expect they would get much sleep) and then participate in a number of operations during the day as well as at night.
